U.S. and European Wire Rope Engineers Meet to Review Standards Development

June 18, 2013- Representatives of the Wire Rope Technical Board (WRTB) and the European Federation of Wire Rope Industries (EWRIS) met in San Diego, Calif., in April, for three days of discussions. This event, which occurs annually in alternate years in the United States and Europe, is held to review standards developments in the wire rope industry. Participants of the respective associations are designated to represent WRTB and EWRIS in this exchange of information, particularly in the areas of design requirements and operation, and to provide recommendations to various standards writing organizations in the United States, Europe, and internationally.

Sany America Teams with BIK Hydraulics to Sponsor Martino Motorsports in NHRA Series

June 18, 2013- SANY America has signed a multi-year agreement to sponsor Mark Martino’s pro stock team in the NHRA Mello Yello drag racing series. The company is sponsoring the team in conjunction with BIK Hydraulics, a Sany crane dealer based in Toronto. Martino will be driving a Pro Stock GXP in the 2013 racing season, which runs through early November.

June 13, 2013- Cliff Dickinson, president of Crane Institute Certification (CIC) Governing committee, has announced that Brian S. Hope, CSP, corporate safety manager at Caldwell Tanks, Louisville, Ky., has been affirmed as a member of the CIC Governing committee. Members of the Governing committee have voting privileges as it relates to CIC policy issues.

Crane Accident: Calgary, Alberta

May 2013—Rail and electrical service were disrupted when a rough-terrain crane’s boom snagged live roadside power lines during a construction project. The crane was driving beneath the lines when its boom caught on them and tore them down. The power lines then fell onto the crane and nearby railroad tracks. The crane operator stayed in the machine’s cab until firefighters arrived and the lines were de-energized. He was not hurt. The incident is under investigation. – calgary.ctvnews.ca

Crane Accident: Gallatin, Tenn.

May 2013—The driver and passenger in a car escaped with minor injuries when the lattice boom of a construction crane collapsed onto the car’s hood as the vehicle drove along an adjacent highway. The accident shut down the highway for more than five hours while crews removed the crane and filled the 5-ft. wide by 3-ft. deep hole the accident made in the roadway.
